Achillefs Kapanidis

Achillefs Kapanidis studied Chemistry at the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and completed a Masters in Food Science and a PhD in Biological Chemistry at Rutgers University (USA). After holding research scientist positions in single-molecule biophysics at Berkeley and UCLA, he became a Senior Lecturer at Oxford University in 2005, and a Professor of Biological Physics in 2013. Prof. Kapanidis is leading a group of physical and biological scientists (the “Gene Machines” group) which studies microbial biological machinery in gene expression, maintenance, and regulation, with a focus on gene transcription and DNA repair. His work has been published in more than 100 papers and book chapters, as well as in several patent applications. Prof. Kapanidis was also co-awarded the 2019 Innovator of the Year Award from the BBSRC.

Dr Irwin Zaid

Dr Irwin Zaid is the founder of See-Through Scientific, a biotechnology start-up that makes devices for adaptive processing and quality control in immunotherapy manufacturing. He is also a lecturer in computer science at Christ Church. Irwin founded See-Through after being a Junior Research Fellow also at Christ Church, and prior to that he completed his DPhil in Oxford Physics. Irwin will talk about his experiences going from DPhil to building a deep tech start-up, ranging from the idea stage through early funding to getting first customers.

Jon Moorhouse

Jon Moorhouse is a partner at Keystone Law, a top 100 UK law firm. He has been providing practical legal support to businesses of all sizes for over 20 years on a range of intellectual property (IP) and commercial issues. He studied Physics & Philosophy at Hertford College and has a Masters in the Management of IP from Queen Mary, London University. He started his career at the international City law firm Allen & Overy, and has since worked in-house at a number of global corporates, including over 10 years as Senior Counsel at Shell, where amongst other things he was legal IP focal point for Shell Ventures. He is the co-founder of Venture Adventures, a one-stop-shop start-up helping start-ups start up, providing the guidance and connections to services they need to succeed.

Matthew Wilson

Matthew Wilson studied at New College, graduating with an MMathPhys in 2016. He went on to co-found Veratrak, an enterprise software start-up, where he led on Product and Operations and raised investment from some of the top venture capital funds in Europe and the US, and participated in the University of Oxford's 'LEV.8 Programme' at the Foundry. Following his experience at Veratrak, Matt attended the 'Entrepreneur First' accelerator programme and is now the founder and CEO of Omnipresent, a start-up helping remote companies navigate the complexities of managing globally distributed teams.

Sasha Haco

Sasha Haco studied Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, before pursuing a PhD in theoretical physics, focusing on the black hole information paradox. Since then, she has started computer vision start-up, Unitary, which is focused on building technology to identify harmful online content, with the aim of making the internet safer.

Sophie Hackford

Sophie Hackford is a futurist. She has given 160+ provocative talks to boards and exec. teams on novel science and tech. Whether quantum computing, AI, or robots in space, Sophie’s talks animate complex technologies in glorious technicolour. She is an advisor to John Deere & Co, on the future of food, climate, and technology. Sophie also co-founded 1715Labs: a spinout from Oxford University’s Astrophysics Department, labelling data to train algorithms. She has previously worked at WIRED Magazine, at Singularity University on the NASA Research Park in Silicon Valley, and Oxford University where she raised $120m for frontier-bending research. Despite very real threats, Sophie is an optimist about the future.

Additionally, Yo has extensive experience of the complex challenges facing leaders within fast paced FTSE100-sized companies, having designed and delivered strategic change and operating model transformation initiatives for companies ranging from BAA to Barclays.
